Synthwave dreamer Teeel aka Jim Smith kicked off his micro Midwest-tour with a gig at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn this Wednesday.

New Jersey-based Jim Smith only became famous as Teeel in 2011, but is by no means a newbie to the music business. As a youth in various metal and hard rock bands, a successful drum and bass DJ in the 90s and founder of his own synthwave record label, Smith has been involved in most aspects of the music industry.

He has said himself that his live shows are better than his recordings, and I have to agree. Despite the somewhat modest audience at Cameo last night, Teeel played his full show as if he was playing for a sold out venue.

It is hard to avoid touching on video games when talking about Teeel, especially in regards to his previous albums, seeing him on stage it becomes evident that he has a background in hard rock. The accompanying guitarist might have enhanced the rock sound, but the preview track from the new album coming out in February definitely makes one think that Teeel is taking on a heavier sound.

Cameo Gallery, a small club space in the heart of Williamsburg, was the perfect setting for this intimate Wednesday night gig. The flowy white ceiling installation looked like it was created especially for the dreamy wave sound which both Teeel and warm-up act Brothertiger have made their specialty.

Anyone who is a fan of Dark Passenger, one of the more prominent tracks from the debut album, knows to appreciate the intense live version which was perfect finale of a great gig.
