Australian music produced the goods in the form of Sydney siren, Rainbow Chan, and the release of her debut EP Long Vacation last week.

Although classically trained in saxophone, piano and choral music, it it is her affinity with anime show tunes, Chinese folk music and J-Pop that has seemed to have resonated most strongly with Rainbow’s sound.

Recorded in Rainbow’s bedroom closet, the EP is an eclectic lucky dip of electronica, pop and acoustic textures. The amalgamation of Chan’s polished vocals in contrast to the raw live loops of music pianos and vintage toys gives the EP a unique flair.

Haircut, The sophomore single off Long Vacation, is the perfect example of Rainbow’s multilayered style. A satirical song about cliché, though no less obligatory, post break-up haircuts, the track is driven by quirky songwriting, detuned harps and distorted synth.

Chan is already working on her next album and has plans to start a noise pop band with her sister.

In the mean time, we suggest you check out Long Vacation out via Silo Arts/French Kiss Label Group.
