Brooklyn-based electronic act Bird Call may not have made it to Mars yet, but have certainly made it to my October play list. The dark yet romantic sound is perfect for any upcoming rainy days.
Chiara Angelicola, the musical mastermind behind Bird Call, spent the winter writing a number of new songs. Angelicola then teamed up with musician a and composer Bryan Senti, who has previously worked with names such as Miike Snow and Rufus Wainwright, to produce Bird Call’s first full-length album. The 12-month creative process resulted in the newly released Will We Ever Get To Mars. Electronic wave, spaceage synth wave, dark wave or experimental dance music. Bird Call’s music does cover multiple genres, but always has a beautiful eeriness to it.
Last night, Bird Call opened for Molly Nilsson at Glasslands during the CMJ in New York. Angelicola has the kind of powerful voice which normally would be associated with soul and r’n’b rather than electronic music. In her stage act, one can discover a hint of soul, a rather interesting contrast which gives her dark electronic image a romantic touch. Bird Call has a tremendous stage presence, Angelicola delivers her songs with both charisma and energy which makes it hard not to like her. As the album is quite dreamy, the powerful 4-man live show is a refreshing compliment which also gave off some Miike Snow vibes.
