Los Angeles duo Flaamingos is on the verge of releasing their debut album, and if the first two released cuts are any indication, it’s going to be a good one.
It’s hard not to compare them to artists like Joy Division, The Teardrop Explodes, and the Chameleons. In fact they seem to be heavily influenced by the psychedelic/post-punk sounds of the early 80s, as well as some shoegaze and synthpop. But this is not merely a case of ‘what was old is new again’. Flaamingos have taken all of these elements and distilled them into something new; something modern; something that grabs you and won’t let go, from the moment you hear that first jangly guitar. The first single from the album, All I Wanna Do Is Live, is dark, moody pop that is as danceable as it is haunting. Singer Jerry Narrows’ deep voice calls out pleadingly while Daniel Koontz’ shimmering guitars and hypnotic bass lines move to the familiar, tinny pulse of a drum machine.
The album is due out on August 27th on Felte Records. You can pre-order the album and download All I Wanna Do Is Live and a second track, Walk A Wire, on the duo’s Bandcamp page. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for updates and tour info.
