London-based Landshapes recently signed to the prestigious Bella Union label who released their debut full-length Rambutan last month.
This idiosyncratic folk-pop quartet have come a long way since their quirky YouTube hit “Cups (You’re Gonna Miss Me)”, when they were still known as Lulu & The Lampshades. The song sparked a slew of equally cup-happy cover versions, but for the band, it was merely a stepping stone. After a name change inspired by a misspelling at a Paris gig, Landshapes are now making waves with their lead single “In Limbo”, added to our playlist last week.
Coming out earlier this year, “In Limbo” is accompanied by a truly amazing video filled with stunning images of Bolivia’s Cholita female wrestlers in La Paz. Described by the band as “a fighting song both musically and lyrically”, it perfectly soundtracks the colorful scenes of city life, as well as the climactic wrestling battles during the second half of the video. The band’s intention was to illustrate and respond to a Latin American society where “being both indigenous and a woman is a double sub-class.” A must watch if there ever was one!
Landshapes are touring the UK this summer, with a quick stop in Copenhagen in August. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
